  • PROJECT NAME: St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Emergency Department Expansion and Renewal
  • CONTRACT VALUE: $7,920,000
  • PROJECT SIZE: 17,500 sq. ft.
  • DURATION: 18 months
  • OWNER: Unity Health Toronto

Unity Health Toronto engaged Compass as the Construction Manager to deliver the expansion and renovation of St. Joseph's Health Centre's Emergency Department. Scope included the Main Emergency Department fit-up, Ambulatory fit-up as well as Paediatrics fit-up. Phase 1 included the renovation and expansion of both Records and Rapid Assessment Zone areas. Phase 2 included Resuscitation Redevelopment of the greater Emergency Department expansion project.

This project was initially over budget and had a longer than desired project schedule. Compass successfully led the Value Engineering process during the Pre-Construction phase, and collaboratively, this resulted in considerable savings of budget and schedule for the Owner.

The Emergency Department is situated in one of the oldest Wings of the hospital. There was outdated infrastructure, as well as considerable abatement requirements. Compass worked with the Consultants, Owner and our sub-contractor building partners to successfully identify all known infrastructure and associated abatement limitations and challenges. We then recommended the best way forward – all the while being very mindful of the project’s budget, schedule as well as the fact the Emergency Department continued to be a 24/7 operational environment within an active Hospital campus.

This project was IPAC Class IV in nature - Group 4 Type D: High Risk Area. Various IPAC strategies were implemented throughout the project. For each phase, Compass developed a site review plan to ensure there was separation of Construction Zones from non-Construction Zones.

Fast-Track construction activities took place within an active and 24/7 operational Emergency Department environment. Phasing was required to minimize disruption to normal operations, capacity and services. Considerable collaboration and communication efforts with the SJHC Redevelopment team, Departmental Leads directly and in-directly impacted by construction activities, Consultants and our sub-contractor building partners resulted in a successful approach.

The expanded Yellow Zone Ambulatory Care Unit provides private treatment rooms, treatment bays, and a dedicated pre-care lounge - all of which ensures comfort and efficiency for patients. The Blue Zone Resuscitation Centre is a cutting-edge facility designed to enhance safety in emergency care for patients, families, and staff alike. State-of-the-art equipment and advanced technology, incorporated with brighter and more comforting lighting provides a welcoming and supportive work environment for St. Joseph's Health Centre's Emergency Department staff.
