Acclaim Health is one of Halton’s most trusted home care providers, and have been for over 90 years. They have a proud and long tradition of providing home and community care to families across the Region and provide a full spectrum of programs to support physical and mental well-being through independent living, reduced social isolation, innovative dementia care, end of life care and bereavement support.

The design intent for their new Dementia Care Centre, Patty’s Place, was to create a comfortable space where day program members and their caregivers can feel safe, confident and energized. Abundant daylight, landscaping and familiar natural textures have been incorporated throughout the building.

The existing single-storey building was a former turbine part manufacturing facility which has been redeveloped and renovated to serve as a seniors' day program and overnight short-term respite facility for people with dementia, a first for Halton Region.

This Adaptive Reuse project's scope of work included complete renovations, alterations as well as full civil scope including: water, storm and sanitary, primary and secondary hydro, grading and asphalt parking areas, as well as landscaping. The fit-out included significant mechanical, electrical and flooring upgrades, as well as all new architectural finishes.

As construction managers, in addition to the construction, we were also engaged to complete Pre-Construction services, providing direction and recommendations from a constructability perspective. This included extensive site assessments, budgeting and scheduling in collaboration with the consultants, as well as sub-trade tendering.

Acclaim Health had very specific operational and strategic requirements, based on Dementia Care programming. These requirements were discussed with the Owner, Dementia Care program lead as well as the Architect and integrated into the overall design intent.

Compass encouraged the Dementia Care program lead to be involved in regular project meetings. This collaboration ensured the overall vision was maintained and for specific constructability concerns during the Pre-Construction phase, we ensured our proposed solutions met the client’s programming requirements.

For example, by understanding the Dementia Care specific functioning requirements for items such as memory boxes, access control, door swings, Mag locks and unique kitchen facility functionality, our Project Manager and Site Superintendent had a deeper understanding of the client's expectations and how the space should function and flow.

Value Engineering included: All Season garden façade, sub-grade insulation, rooftop unit screening as well as equipment alternates. The result was multiple months of schedule savings and significant cost savings.

Collaboration between Compass, Owner and consulting teams resulted in an informed and streamlined project process, and further strengthened relationships.

The Acclaim Health Dementia Care Centre has transformed dementia care - both in Halton Region and is a centre of excellence in the province.
