This project involved the renovation and repurposing of existing academic classrooms, research, and faculty spaces to house new teaching and demonstration kitchens. The scope of work, completed over two floors, included demolition, new flooring, high-end architectural finishes, theatre seating, significant mechanical and electrical upgrades and the supply and installation of extensive commercial kitchen equipment and custom manufactured stainless-steel furnishings.

Because this was a retrofit project, there were interferences and site conditions in the ceiling that were not addressed in the design stage. The Compass project team was proactive in identifying these interferences in a timely fashion to mitigate delays and schedule impact.

Another challenge on this project was related to the complex electrical work. In the design, there was no clear path for the power feeds from the distribution panel on the roof to the rooms on the first, second, and third floors. The Compass team proposed an alternative route which included new coring in the roof for additional electrical shafts to distribute the feeds down to the impacted rooms on floors 1 to 3.

The work was phased and was undertaken while the building remained occupied and continued normal teaching functions. Compass worked closely with the client and with sub-trades
to ensure minimal disruption to the school’s attending students and staff.
